The Juvenile Status Bulletin

The Juvenile Status Bulletin is a quarterly electronic bulletin designed by the Juvenile Justice Statistics Subcommittee of the Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee to collect and disseminate important statistics about Charlottesville/Albemarle juveniles on a regular basis. The Bulletin provides agency personnel, decision-makers, judges and interested citizens with up to date juvenile statistics and agency utilization rates on a quarterly basis. These statistics can be used to: identify community needs, provide data for grant applications, plan for service delivery and effectively utilize available resources. A glossary of terms is attached.

How to Read the Bulletin

The Bulletin is divided into the following six sections with data collected for the quarter shown at the top of the page:

1. Service Provider Utilization
· Quarterly utilization rates for the current quarter for the programs listed in this section.
2. Cases in Foster CareThis Quarter
· Total Foster Care Cases for the Current Quarter, Year to Date and Same Quarter of the Previous Year reported by the Albemarle County Department of Social Services (ACDSS) and the Charlottesville Department of Social Services (CDSS).
· Total Foster Care Cases Added for the Current Quarter, Year to Date and Same Quarter of the Previous Year for ACDSS and CDSS.
· Cases Discharged from Foster care for the Current Quarter, Year to Date and Same Quarter of the Previous Year for ACDSS and CDSS.
3. Cases on Juvenile Probation and Parole This Quarter

· Total Probation Cases in the Juvenile Court for the Current Quarter, Year to Date and Same Quarter of the Previous Year for Albemarle County and Charlottesville City.
· Total Parole Cases in the Juvenile Court for the Current Quarter, Year to Date and Same Quarter of the Previous Year for Albemarle County and Charlottesville City.

4. Juvenile Court Intakes This Quarter
· Total Juvenile Court Intakes for the Current Quarter, Year to Date and Same Quarter of the Previous Year for Albemarle County and Charlottesville City for: Delinquent, CHINS, Custody/Domestic Relations, Probation/Parole Violations, Court Order Violations, Protective Order Petitions, Juvenile Domestic Assault and Diversions.
5. Police Reports This Quarter

· Juvenile Arrests for the Current Quarter, Year to Date and Previous Year for Albemarle County and Charlottesville City .
· Domestic Violence Assault Arrests for the Current Quarter, Year to Date and Previous Year for Albemarle County and Charlottesville City.
· Domestic Violence Service Calls for the Current Quarter, Year to Date and Previous Year for Albemarle County and Charlottesville City.
· Contacts re: Juvenile Missing Persons for the Current Quarter, Year to Date and Previous Year for Albemarle County and Charlottesville City .


Glossary

Service Provider Utilization - The total number of Charlottesville/Albemarle clients served by each program listed during the Bulletin quarter.

Foster Care - The formal agreement whereby a judge places custody of a juvenile with the local department of social services.

Juvenile Probation - The court supervision of a juvenile found guilty of the charges brought  against them. 

Juvenile Parole - The court supervision of a juvenile after release from a correctional facility.

Juvenile Court Intakes - The first contact with the juvenile justice system in which the referral is reviewed and a decision is made to file a petition for court or divert a case.

Delinquent Intakes - Intake for an act committed by a juvenile for which an adult could be prosecuted in criminal court.

CHINS (Child in Need of Supervision) Intakes - Intake for a juvenile who is absent from school without a reason or who runs away from home.

Custody/Domestic Relations Intakes - Intake for all custody visitation and child support cases.

Probation and Parole Violation Intakes - Intake for a juvenile who has violated probation or parole as defined above.

Court Order Violation Intakes - Intake for a juvenile who refuses to comply with a court order.

Protective Order Petition Intakes - Request for protection by the court from a spouse that the complainant has a child in common with, or protection from someone the complainant has lived with.

Juvenile Domestic Assault Intakes - Intake of a juvenile for domestic violence assault.

Diversions - The diversion of a juvenile from the juvenile justice system by referring the youth to a treatment program or simply discontinuing the case.

Police Reports - Reports by the police for juvenile arrests, domestic violence assault arrests (adult and juvenile), domestic violence service calls (adult and juvenile) and juvenile missing person reports.

Juvenile Arrests - Taking a juvenile into custody for the purpose of charging him/her with an offense.

Domestic Violence Assault Arrests - Domestic violence assault arrests of adults and juveniles.

Domestic Violence Service Calls - Domestic violence calls to the police involving adults and juveniles. 

Juvenile Missing Persons - Juveniles reported to the police as missing persons.
