Work Plan
Youth Service Learning Work Group

Rationale

The young people of our community benefit from supportive experiences that enhance their abilities to be successful as youth and adults. National, state, and local research has proven that involving youth in service learning programs that meet "best-practices" criteria is an effective strategy for decreasing teen pregnancy, reducing delinquency, improving job and social skills, increasing community connectedness, and promoting school success.

This mission of the Youth Service Learning Work Group is to increase opportunities for meaningful volunteer experiences for youth by advocating high-quality service learning activities and improving the coordination of youth volunteer initiatives in the community.

Targeted Outcomes

• More youth will participate in quality "best practices" service learning programs.

• A "best practices" youth service learning manual will be in use throughout the community.

• A virtual youth service learning information network will be utilized by youth and adults.

• Schools, agencies, and service sites will work together effectively to coordinate youth service activities.

• More community professionals and youth will receive service learning training.

• The possibility of funding and hiring a community youth service coordinator will be determined.
